I’ve dropped into Iceland twice, both times in transit to elsewhere. My favorite image from my Icelandic stopovers happened one Saturday night as the bars were closing in Reykjavik.
A large, boisterous crowd formed beneath my hotel window. Several men began pummeling on another. The crowd cheered them on. A half dozen police stood by and waited for the men to tire themselves out. Which they soon did. The crowd dispersed. The men limped away. The police got back into their cars. I went back to bed.
Sadly, that image was recorded only in my jet-lagged brain. Sticking my camera out the second-floor window felt voyeuristic. I’ve always followed the Code that what happens after the bars close in Reykjavik stays. . .well, you know rule.
These three images are my next Icelandic favorites, all taken on a gloriously sun-lit road trip from Reykjavik to the black sands of Reynisfjara Beach.
Of course food, shelter, health, and security are the most important issues that we must solve as a human race. But once we’ve ticked them off our list, let’s vow to get everyone in the world a ticket to Iceland. The world deserves nothing less.

Why Am I Offering a Free Print to Paid Subscribers?
I want to reach across the virtual divide that separates us and offer something tangible, something meaningful to me that I’ve created with my own hands and that you can hold with yours. It’s old-school, I get it. And it costs me a little bit to do this, but your support means means everything to me. so let’s give this a try.
I have been in those shoes before. You want to photograph something, you're exhausted AND it feels too self-serving to photograph that moment. Your words made up for it!
Intriguingly surreal imagery Mark. Backsides allow us to share what's being seen without disturbing the vibes. I'm totally intrigued by that tiny house on the prairie 'behind" the horse 😆
Cheers!
